What I Do As a Digital Marketing Generalist (So Far)
It’s been 3 months since I’ve started working as a digital marketing generalist with a small remote company based in Arizona. So far, I’m loving everything that I’ve been exposed to. Even the things I was nervous about (i.e. reporting and analytics) I’m finding enjoyable.
What is a generalist?
I have a hand in a bunch of different types of digital marketing projects which is why I’m not known as a specialist right now. I’ve worked on SEO keyword research and optimizations, writing blog posts, email marketing, and creating graphics for display ads and social media. I also do analytics reporting for our clients for their website. If I were a specialist I would likely do one part of digital marketing like social media marketing or SEO.
Tools I use
I use a variety of tools in my day-to-day work.
SEO & content marketing
- Screaming Frog
- Google Search Console
- Google Trends
Website analytics & reporting
- Google Analytics
- DashThis – My personal fav
- Google Data Studio
- Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator & Photoshop)
Productivity & team communication
- ClickUp Project Management
- Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Calendar, & Gmail)
Social media management
What’s my favorite part?
I’ve never truly enjoyed a job before now. I love that evert day is different and that I get to work on a variety of projects. One day I might work on SEO, and the next day creating graphics for social media. No two days are exactly the same and I think that keeps it interesting.
What does the future hold?
I’m working part-time right now but I’m hoping to go full-time soon. I have yet to really learn SEM (search engine marketing) like paid ads or Google Ads. I know this is to come with my ongoing training and if it’s anything like what I’ve done so far, I think I’ll come to enjoy that too.
